From March 31, 2018, car manufacturers should equip all new models with technology that will communicate with the interoperable eCall service under the number 112.
On March 2, 2015, the Council adopted its position on the requirements for installing eCall devices in new vehicles. The European Parliament is expected to confirm the position of the Council without amendments during second reading vote in the plenary will meet before the summer.
The aim of pan-European eCall is the fastest intervention of emergency services in traffic accidents. The new vehicles will be equipped with wireless devices that will automatically send a signal to the emergency number 112.
The eCall system will help reduce the number of injured or killed in road accidents in the European Union. Is estimated to reduce by half the time response of the emergency services, thus saving lives and providing immediate care to the wounded.
The infrastructure for the eCall system should be ready by October 1, 2017. It can be used for free by all consumers.
EMERGENCY SERVICES
Vehicle operators will still have access to third party services beyond the eCall system under call number 112. However, these additional services should not affect the functioning of eCall under call number 112.
The eCall devices are compatible with the Galileo satellite navigation systems and EGNOS, but manufacturers can ensure compatibility with other navigation systems.
DATA PROTECTION
Vehicles will not be subject to continuous monitoring, while the data of the previous positions of the vehicle will be removed permanently. Data will not be disclosed to third parties without the consent of the vehicle owner. Detailed technical rules will prevent the exchange of personal data between the eCall system to the vehicle and third systems. This ensures the right to privacy and protection of personal data.
